The GTS-LHC ion source delivers primary heavy ions for the CERN accelerator chain. For the production of lead ions the solid lead is evaporated from a micro-oven. Information about the amount of lead inside the source can help to better understand the source behavior and to develop tools to support the source operation. The topic of this work would be the optical spectroscopy of low charge state ions inside the plasma and to study selected optical lines in relation to the source settings and the source behavior. In a second step the found relations may be used to develop software tools to control the micro-oven and source settings to optimize the source operation. Knowledge in plasma physics, ion sources and spectroscopy are welcome.
