Dr John Jowett graduated in Mathematical Physics from the University of Edinburgh and has Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge.
He has had a long career in particle accelerator physics at CERN, during which he worked on the design, beam physics and operation of LEP, the LHC and other collider projects. In particular, he was responsible for the "pretzel" luminosity upgrade of LEP and the heavy-ion programme of the LHC.
He has also worked at SLAC National Laboratory in the USA and served on numerous international advisory and review committees. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Presently JUAS Director Designate, he will take over as Director in Spring 2020. He is also now a member of the ALICE experiment.
